Understanding Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs when the arteries that supply blood to your heart become narrowed or blocked. The most common cause is atherosclerosis—a buildup of fatty deposits and fibrous plaques inside artery walls. This restricts blood flow, often leading to chest pain called angina.

If a blood clot forms in a narrowed artery, it can trigger a heart attack (myocardial infarction), causing serious damage to the heart muscle. While CAD primarily involves the coronary arteries, atherosclerosis can affect other vessels too, increasing the risk of stroke, aneurysm, and poor circulation in the limbs, bowel, and kidneys.

Recognizing Symptoms

The hallmark symptom of CAD is angina, but some people have no warning signs. In these cases, changes on an electrocardiogram (EKG)—especially during an exercise stress test—may reveal the problem. Exercise raises the heart’s demand for blood, and narrowed arteries can’t keep up, altering the heart’s electrical activity.

Sadly, some only discover CAD during a heart attack, which carries a 15% risk of death before medical care.

Angina feels like squeezing, pressure, or burning in the chest or upper abdomen. Pain may radiate to the arms (especially the left), neck, jaw, or stomach. Other symptoms include sweating, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, and palpitations. It’s often mistaken for indigestion.

Types of Angina:

  • Stable Angina: Predictable, triggered by exertion, stress, large meals, smoking, or extreme temperatures. Lasts 1–5 minutes and eases with rest.
  • Unstable Angina: Unpredictable and more dangerous. Occurs more often, lasts longer, and may happen at rest.

How CAD Is Diagnosed

Diagnosis starts with a review of your medical history, symptoms, and medications. Your doctor will determine if your angina is stable or unstable, perform a physical exam, and may order tests to confirm CAD and its severity.

Chelation Therapy & Cardiovascular Support

EDTA chelation therapy helps remove toxins and metabolic waste from the bloodstream. Given orally or intravenously, it can improve blood flow, reduce plaque buildup, and may:

  • Reverse atherosclerosis
  • Lower heart attack and stroke risk
  • Serve as an alternative to bypass surgery or angioplasty
  • Reduce reliance on medications
  • Act as a powerful antioxidant

  • What are some natural ways to improve heart health?

There are several natural ways to improve heart health. These include maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins; engaging in regular physical activity; managing stress through techniques like meditation or yoga; getting adequate sleep; limiting alcohol consumption; and avoiding tobacco use. Additionally, certain supplements like omega-3 fatty acids, CoQ10, and magnesium may be beneficial, but it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen.
  • How does stress affect heart health?

Stress can significantly impact heart health in various ways. Chronic stress can lead to high blood pressure, increased heart rate, and inflammation in the body, all of which are risk factors for heart disease. It can also contribute to unhealthy behaviors such as overeating, excessive alcohol consumption, or smoking, which further compromise heart health. Managing stress through relaxation techniques, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for maintaining a healthy heart.
  • Can lifestyle changes reverse heart disease?

While not all heart disease can be completely reversed, significant lifestyle changes can often slow the progression of heart disease and, in some cases, even reverse some of its effects. A heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, stress management, and quitting smoking can lead to improvements in heart health markers such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and arterial function. However, the extent of reversal depends on the individual's specific condition, the severity of the disease, and how consistently lifestyle changes are maintained. It's essential to work closely with healthcare professionals to develop a personalized plan for managing and potentially reversing heart disease.
